When you are on vacation on the sea, you can’t help but lean over the edge of the boat and watch the waves roll by the distant blue, hoping for something to pop out from beneath. Different sea creatures can swim beneath you and you wouldn’t know it. It is exciting to see dolphins and whales to glide across the sea, it is also thrilling to see a shark but comes along with it a feeling of anxiety. But there are sharks that don’t really mind you and are quite harmless.
Whale shark, the largest fish in the sea that could grow up to 40 feet is capable of escaping detection. Jason Holmberg, Wild Me’s information architect, went to an expedition in Mexico that tracks animals by attaching plastic tags with spear guns.
One day he sat down and started programming and thought to use the spots on a whale shark like a human fingerprint and allow people to photograph them. But Holmberg was unable to make an algorithm to identify one shark from another. With a help of a Dutchman working at NASA, who was using an algorithm that matches the pattern of the stars, he was able to refine it. And that said algorithm has been used to identify the whale sharks.
A public cloud service allows the organization to scale up and down the servers at their disposal, depending on how much computing they need at any one time. The hardest part of building a system that can identify a single whale shark from others is the data management. So with that, Wild Me built Wildbook, an open source data management framework for use in wildlife and ecology study.
Wildbook is one part of the IBEIS (Image Based Ecological Information System) computer vision platform, storing, managing that IBEIS queries. IBEIS was developed by Wild Me with researches at University of Illinois and Princeton University, and has been used for the identification of other animals, including their migration.
With Wildbook, people can now post pictures and videos of their encounters with whale sharks; the website shows the history of sightings of the same animal and their location. With this, you can look forward to seeing the same whale shark again.


Pokemon Go and Cloud Computing

Pokémon GO, the latest craze which dominated the world today. A few years ago, you can just sit anywhere and play with your Gameboy or DS to look for Pokémon but now, you really have to move around in order to look for them.
